A 5-year-old boy has died this after he was struck by lightning while vacationing with his family in North Carolina.
The unnamed boy was on the beach in the town of Carova in the state's Outer Banks when he was struck Sunday afternoon, according to reports.
When emergency crews responded just after 4:00 p.m., authorities said the family put had put the boy in their SUV to meet EMS partway.
The family is reportedly from the Philadelphia area.
The ambulance then crossed state lines in Virginia Beach, according to reports. A medical helicopter was unable to respond due to severe weather.
The boy was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 6 p.m.
