A woman has died from severe head injuries after a generator fell off a lorry and crushed her.
The 40-year-old woman died near Etchingham railway station, East Sussex, shortly before 7am yesterday and another man suffered serious injuries.
A third man was forced to jump over a church wall to avoid being hit by the generator.
Other commuters performed CPR and first aid on the injured pair until the paramedics and an air ambulances doctors arrived.
The generator is believed to have come loose from the back of the flatbed lorry near a level crossing.
The 42-year-old driver from Ashford in Kent was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: ‘Emergency services were called to a report of a generator having fallen off a Ford transit flatbed lorry and hit two pedestrians in Etchingham High Street near the railway station level crossing just before 6.55am.’
‘A 40-year-old woman sadly died at the scene. A man aged 44 was also suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
